what it is and how we treat it

In infants and children the Eustachian Tube is more horizontal, smaller and wider than in adults.
Due to lower resistance, infections can easily travel up the tube to the ears. Repeated upper respiratory infections, infected enlarged adenoids, allergy and weakness of the palate muscles can cause partial or complete obstruction of the tube resulting in collection of the fluid, leading to middle ear infections.

When considering hearing tests for children, the key point to remember is that the ear is a very complex organ, consisting of several parts.  Therefore, a hearing tests for children are quite complex tests for children under the age of 5. We use highly specialised equipment (an audiometer; tympanometer; Otoacoustic Emissions Machines (OAE); Auditory Brainstem Response Machines (ABR)) to test a specific part of the ear.
